What is a saltwater swimming pool?

Some of our villa and hotel pools are described as saltwater. This does not mean the pool is filled with seawater. Saltwater pools - also referred to as saline-filtered pools - use a salt chlorine generator (electrolysis) to convert dissolved salt into chlorine for sanitization. This tends to result in softer water which is gentler on skin, eyes and hair, with greatly reduced added chemicals compared to traditional chlorine pools.
