Do I need an International driving permit?

If you hold a UK photocard driving licence, you do not need an International Driving Permit (IDP) to drive in most EU countries when visiting as a tourist. You can use your UK licence alone for driving in the EU for short stays.

For Turkey, the situation is slightly different. While some tourists with a UK photocard licence may not be asked for one, it is considered necessary for legal compliance. For Turkey, a 1968 IDP is the appropriate version, as it’s widely recognised and accepted there. You can obtain an official IDP before you travel from participating PayPoint stores across the UK.

An IDP is required for all destinations if you are a holder of a driving licence issued in the USA, Canada, Australia and other countries outside of the EU.
